NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANISATION ALTERNATIVE KAKANJ

	ISV participants in visit to a primeval forest reserve in Kakanj
.	Second group of American students-volunteers (ISV) continued working in the Trstionica – Žuča forest region which is proposed by Kakanj municipality to be protected under the Natural area protection law. Interestingly, the initiators of this activity are ŠPD ZDK – Šumarstvo Kakanj and work group for biodiversity and natural values within LEAP (Local ecological action plan) which is presided by Maksuma Topalović, executive director of NGO „Alternative“ Kakanj, which developed projects for ISV volunteers' participation. Besides Kakanj, ISV also has volunteers working in Banja Luka.
	Regarding Kakanj, one project is focused on protection, promotion and restoration of the historic trail from Bukovica excursion site to the medieval town of Bobovac. The project is financed by the federal Ministry of environment and tourism as well as the cantonal Ministry of education, science, culture and sport. Second project is focused on protection and promotion of the Trstionica – Žuča region with a natural reserve of beech and coniferous trees which is registered in BiH natural heritage register. This project is also financed by the federal Ministry of environment and tourism Primeval forest areas are invaluable for preservation of biodiversity, education and science, monitoring forest growth and modeling forest management systems. Volunteers spent two days in one such area and worked overtime to complete works started by the first group which was in Mehoric from June 26 – July 11. They worked on fixing the trails connecting buildings, leveling terrain, cleaning forest edge from waste, weeds and fallen branches and arranging drinking water well. Thanks to working overtime and help by 20 volunteers from Kakanj, the job was successfully completed in two instead of five working days. We also completed a humanitarian activity of plastering and painting a room within ŠPD's object in which an old man Fadil has been living alone for 15 years.
